| We have seen federal grant funding for test performance drive states and educators toward "teaching to the test." Overall, this approach diminishes students' ability to engage in holistic, critical, and creative learning. Local property tax dependent school funding causes funding inequalities between high-poverty areas and low-poverty areas, which have greater property values and property tax revenue. Nationally, in 2015, high-poverty districts spent 15.6 percent less per student than low-poverty districts did. National education standards can shift the focus onto individual schools and teachers, if implemented, they must address the socioeconomic root issues that affect school and student performance. | |||
